How Sunfish Lake Park was established
The best-known park in Lake Elmo is the Lake Elmo Park Reserve because of its size, and because it contains the biggest and most beautiful lake in the city: Lake Elmo itself; but the City of Lake Elmo has yet another large park within its boundaries that some people consider to be even more beautiful. Sunfish Lake Park was named after Sunfish Lake which partly runs into the park’s eastern side. In 1974, the land that was to become Sunfish Lake Park was privately owned. Both the city’s commissioners and the private owners decided that it would be in everyone’s interested if the land was preserved for the area’s wildlife and for use as a park by Elmo Lake residents. The land was sold to the city at a considerable discount for this purpose, earning the private owners high praise for their contribution to their community. Sunfish Lake Park attracts a lot of birdwatchers because of the many species of birds that can be observed here. On September 22, 2009, Sunfish Lake Park became legally protected by the Minnesota Land Trust, ensuring that generations of Lake Elmo City citizens that have yet to be born will enjoy this park’s beauty and wildlife as much as people in Lake Elmo and surrounding areas do today.
